The capital city Beijing has introduced an Olympic-theme lottery which overall has prizes of up to 5 million yuan ($709,000), reported local media. Although gambling in China has been prohibited since 1949 by the leading Communist Party, the sports lotteries which are run by the state have gained a lot of popularity since the 1980s.
Five types of games will be incorporated in the Olympic lottery, which will cover all of the 28 sports present in the Beijing Olympics. The price of the tickets will vary from three to ten yuan, said Xinhua news agency.
One of the games, which will be on sale between late April and the 7th of August, (one day before the opening ceremony) consists in the bettor wagering on how many gold, silver and bronze medals China will win at certain activities. The remaining four games, which will be on sale from the 8th of August until the 24th, (during the Olympic period), will give the opportunity to those who are interested to bet on winners of preliminary rounds, competitions and medal winners on each day.
The designs of the actual lottery tickets will contain the five Beijing Olympic mascots (the Fuwas), the Olympic game introductions, and the Olympic torch route, among other motifs.
